So how do you choose what to install? Energy star have given guidelines on how to choose the right windows and skylights to ensure quality and energy efficiency. To purchase one, you must identify your climate zone. Climate zone has four categories northern, southern, north central and south central. You will know which area you fall into by checking out their map. Once you have identified your location, the next best thing is to check the label of the product and see if it has the specifications that are right for your climate zone. You can do this by checking the energy performance rating that contains information about the U-factor and the solar heat gain coefficient. For example, for people in the Northern area should have windows that have a u-factor that is equal or less than .30. The solar heat gain coefficient can have of any value. For skylights the u-factor should be less than or equal to .55.

Windows and skylights also have different designs. There are double-hung windows, French windows and many others. As for skylights, they come in different shapes. It can be rectangular and flat or tubular and dome. You need to buy a product that would match the elements of your interior design to benefit from it aesthetically.

Once you have the right product on hand, your next concern is installation. If you have experience doing carpentry on your own, installation of pre-fabricated windows and skylights may not be much of a problem. At least you have the basics and understanding the manufacturer's instruction wouldn't be too hard to do. However, if you have no idea on how to install windows and skylights, it is best to hire a contractor to install the product properly.

A properly installed window and skylight helps prevent the incidence of air leaks. Leakage of air causes energy bills to rise. Hence, you must be careful not to allow this as this will put extra work to your HVAC systems.

If you have old outdated windows, you can take them out and replace them with the latest models. If you do not have skylights, you can install one in your bathroom, your kitchen and certain parts of the house that are dimmer than the other areas. You can install these items in your homes without having to spend much. Just as long as you include all the considerations mentioned above, you can enjoy the benefits of having the best windows and skylights in your home.
