There are various tips and advice that can be had by a person looking for home garden design ideas. However, someone living in an apartment in a busy city like New York will have very limited garden designing options since it is highly probable that space is not available for garden furniture or other materials bigger than a potted plant.

For city dwellers, particularly those living in apartments and who do not have the benefit of a backyard or a vacant lot for a traditional garden, experts recommend having an indoor garden or potted plants strategically placed in windows, along the foyer or in various corners of the dwelling. This form of home gardening offers a different type of challenge as opposed to backyard or open air gardening.

Experts in gardening have stated that the primary concern when it comes to having an indoor garden is to find plants that can survive despite being cooped under a roof and within four walls. Home garden design, in this case, has more to do with choosing the right plants rather than choosing the correct garden furniture.

Some of the plants recommended by gardening experts are aspidistra, sago palm and strawberry begonia. According to them, aspidistra or cast iron plant can survive without a regular dose of water and sunlight. The sago palm, on the other hand, is considered one of the hardiest plants around. It can be left on its own in a corner or on the window sill and does not require constant attention.

Garden experts also recommend the strawberry begonia which has the ability to sprout runners despite being kept inside where there is little and even nonexistent light and water. These three plants do not require constant care, but during winter, gardening enthusiasts recommend soaking them in the shower from time to time as winter can be bad for apartment plants, particularly in dwellings with radiator heat.

The number one home garden design tip offered by experts to apartment dwellers is to place plants in the window as they can give a sense of coziness and can provide additional color. They recommend putting the plants as close as possible to the glass so they can take in as much sunlight as they can.
