While the winter winds are indeed cold, a room's color can extend a feeling of warmth to anyone who enters it. So, when planning to remodel a room, consider using colors that will make it feel inviting and cozy. Working warm colors into a room during the harsh cold of winter actually makes a space feel warmer.

Interesting Wall Colors to Add Warmth
Introducing warm hues, like yellow, orange, red, and warm brown, into a room's design is a wonderful way to make the entire space feel bright and friendly. While it is probably still a good idea to keep the walls and flooring in the room in more neutral hues, use intense bursts of color for accessories. Another option is to create a focal wall by applying a warm color to one wall of a room, while leaving the rest of the room in more neutral warm tones. By creating one colorful wall in a room, the accessories in the room can still be easily swapped out changing the whole look of the room. The room can still be decorated for each season, without ever having to repaint the wall. Pair a deep warm toned wall with light and bright accessories for spring and summer, and add rich autumn colors to accessories for fall and winter. During the holidays, deep burgundy and forest green pair very nicely with sunny yellow or chocolate brown tones.

Accent a Room with Splashes of Warm Colors
Another way to freshen up a room is by infusing it with warm color accents. Add an area rug by the hearth in a rich terracotta hue to make the entire fireplace area feel more cordial. Add a throw blanket over the back of the living room couch in a rich brown with red undertones. Add a collection of pillar candles to the coffee table, and the candle grouping can include several different warm colors for additional interest. Candles are an especially effective way to add warmth to a room, not only with the warm candle color, but also with the flame's amber glow. Another way to accent lively, warm colors in a room's design is by juxtaposing them against fresh, crisp white, which creates an inviting contrast.

The Power of Lighting
Especially in the dreary months of winter, adequate lighting is very important. With nightfall coming early in the day and bleak, winter skies, having the proper light inside can go a long way towards improving the warm feeling of a room. While fluorescent bulbs are extremely cost effective and energy efficient, they emit a cool colored light, which tends to drain a room's energy. Full spectrum lights, which mimic the light of the sun, are an excellent choice for lighting; but if fluorescent lighting is being used, make sure to look at all colors and patterns that are being considered under the fluorescent lighting before selecting them, so that all of the colors and patterns do not appear to be washed out.
