Even though a pool can be a wonderful addition to any home, heating the water enough to make it comfortable to swim can be an expensive proposition. Conventional gas pool heaters are notoriously inefficient and since the pool water typically cools off every evening, you have to run the heater constantly to keep the pool water warm. This can become a very expensive process very quickly that prevents many families from using their pool for most of the summer. Fortunately this no longer has to be a problem since the same type of solar water heating technology that has been used on homes is now being adapted for heating the water in pools. These solar water heating systems are an inexpensive and very efficient way to use the free energy the sun provides to lower your energy bills and heat your pool all summer.

A solar water heating system for your pool is easy to setup and can warm all the water youíll need to enjoy even the largest pool. These systems have been around for several years and have enjoyed a steady stream of improvements to make them better and less expensive. Most of these systems are easy enough to be installed by the homeowner and take an afternoonís worth of work to complete. They can be used as a standalone system, or added to a conventional pool heater that is already installed on your pool.

The way this solar water heating systems work is by placing a set of solar collectors in a sunny area near the pool. These can be mounted on the roof of the home if itís close enough to the pool or mounted on a platform on the ground as well. These solar collectors take the water from the pool and circulate it through a complex of small pipes that are part of a webbing in the solar collector. As it passes through these small pipes it is heated by the sun and returned to the pool. Because there are a large number of these smaller pipes, the collector can heat a large quantity of water very quickly.

The water is forced through these solar collectors as a natural part of the circulation driven by the pools pump, so no additional equipment is needed. This helps keep the cost low and simplifies the installation as well. Some of the more sophisticated solar water heating systems include a thermostat that will divert the pool water away from the solar collectors when it reaches a preset temperature to ensure the pool water doesnít become too hot. Many of these solar water heating systems can even be connected to your pools control system and operate just like a conventional pool heater. The advantage of using one of these solar water heaters is that once itís installed you can heat your pool all summer for free using sunlight for fuel.
