As hardwood floors continue to grow in popularity some homeowners are starting to look beyond the more traditional choices for something a little more exotic, that will set their rooms apart from everyone else's. Here are some of the exotics that are growing in popularity and a basic explanation of their unique characteristics:

Brazilian Cherry - Brazilian Cherry - or Jatoba as it also sometimes known - is a very hard hardwood that is usually a beautiful reddish brown wood, with an interlocking grain and a golden luster. It adds a sense of warmth to a room, making it the perfect choice for a large living room.

Brazilian Walnut - This hardwood actually comes from the Lapacho tree but is often referred to as a walnut because of its olive brown to almost black color range. Another extremely hard hardwood flooring option, the yellower sapwood of the Lapacho tree often creates some highly attractive but unusual tone and color variations.

Cabreuva - This is one hardwood flooring material that instantly adds a unique twist to any room it is installed in. While the heartwood of the carbreuva is a deep purple red its sapwood is a pale brown. These interesting color combination create hardwood floors that are truly a delight to behold.

Tiger Wood - For people who prefer their hardwood floors to err a little more on the light side Tiger Wood may be the perfect choice. The heart wood of the tiger wood tree is a delicate reddish golden brown and the sapwood a brownish gray that can almost appear white. When a tiger wood hardwood floor is installed any room instantly gains a brighter, lighter feeling, great for a smaller room.

These are just a few of the exotic hardwoods that are available for flooring today, there are many, many more. Each has their own unique characteristics and appearance and each of them are worth a second look when choosing your new hardwood floor.
