Installing brick pavers for your sidewalk or the entire driveway will instantly increase your home's curb appeal, and make buyers add your home to their favorites list on a real estate tour.

Brick pavers have been around for centuries. Cobblestone streets were the modern day answer to dirt paths traveled by wagons and stagecoaches, and now they are the answer to adding unique stonescapes to your home. One of the best features of using brick for any path traveled either by vehicle or foot is that repairs are as simple as replacing the broken paver.

Be aware when you are purchasing your materials that bricks for homes are not as strong as bricks for paving. There are also different manufacturing requirements for compression tolerance and cold-water absorption of bricks in various parts of the country. This is particularly important for the northern states, where some require a minimum strength of 8,000 pounds per square inch.

Add your own style with color

Brickwork does not have to be a standard, well, brick color. Although this traditional look is every bit as pleasing when used in the right areas, adding a touch of color makes your home stand out in the neighborhood. A process called flashing infuses permanent color into the paving brick, which will not fade because it is added before the brick is fired in an oven that reaches almost 2,000° F.

Colors of these versatile pavers may vary from region to region, but the usual hues are muted earth tones. You will also find some lighter options such as greenish gray or tan. For those who would like to have an even lighter look, some bricks pavers are available in cream. Another option is darker colors, or blends of dark and light bricks, which can be created through flashing.

Designing it right

Placing brick pavers in a standard building pattern is fine for many applications, but if you would like to add some splash to your landscape's appearance, consider using a circle kit. These slope-sides pavers connect to create a circular pattern, radiating out from the center core. Kits are pre-arranged for a variety of diameters to suit any paved area from a small patio to the focal point in a driveway. Some kits offer a combination of circle designs with a squared-off center, or a star design by incorporating granite. Designs can also be completely customized, depending on the availability from local masonry companies. With so many styles and sizes available through your local home building retailer, your home need never look like your neighbor's creating a unique statement that is your own.
