Lighting fixtures can make a big difference in the overall appeal of your home. Standard builder’s grade fixtures do very little to express any sense of style and are typically chosen for their cheap price. However, if “cheap” is not the ambiance that you want to convey in your foyer, replace those boring fixtures with something more beautiful in classic, vintage or contemporary style. While wall decor, area rugs and accessories all contribute to a gorgeous foyer, they can make up for a lighting fixture that is more eyesore than elegant. Simply changing the lighting fixtures for something more stylish is an easy way to upgrade the look of your foyer and your entire home.

Defining Style with a Foyer Ceiling Fixture

Very often we don’t think about the style of a fixture in the foyer, especially if we use a different entrance to the home on a regular basis and what tends to happen is that the fixture that was installed when the house was built stays in place year after year. However, visitors will notice the ambiance created with the right fixture and the great news is that there are so many styles to choose from!

A pendant style light or chandelier is a classically beautiful choice. You can choose a traditional crystal, antique vintage or a bold modern chandelier depending on the style and design of your home. Pendant lights are generally simpler, smaller and less ornate than chandeliers but are beautiful as well. Remember to consider the size of your foyer and the height of the ceiling when choosing a hanging fixture of any type. If wall height is only eight feet, for example, there may not be enough clearance for a hanging chandelier. It’s also important that the chandelier is in scale with the size of the room so that it is neither overwhelming nor too diminutive for the space.

Other Fixtures to Consider

If you’d rather not have a chandelier or do not have enough overhead clearance, flush mount ceiling fixtures are a potential option. You can find them in many traditional and contemporary styles, from simple and modern to elaborate and ornate. The finish and style of the fixture will go a long way in defining its style and you can choose from polished to antique brass, shiny modern metallics, vintage pewter or black metal and more. Cut glass, crystal, stained glass and frosted glass globes can add unique style.

Sconces and Table Lamps for Light and Style

Not all homes have a ceiling fixture in the foyer. If there is clearance and room, an electrician could install one for you, or you could opt for one or more wall fixtures like wall sconces, wall lights or lanterns. Or choose candle sconces and lanterns that do not require any electrical installation and provide a soft, welcoming glow. Another beautiful option is a table lamp in the foyer; you can find them in a variety of sizes, heights and styles, along with many choices in lampshades, to add a perfect well-lit decorative touch to your entry area.
