We are all aware of the importance heating and cooling our home during extreme weather conditions. However, we are also aware that they can be expensive. Although this is the case, we can do several measures to reduce our heating and cooling expenses. One way of achieving that is through insulation. This is useful both in the winter and in the summer.

Insulation can help reduce utility expenses because this will reduce the level of usage of heating and cooling devices. This is done by maintaining the temperature inside the room while keeping the outside forces out. For instance, during the summer, you use your air conditioner extensively. If your home is not properly insulated, the cool air that the AC releases will escape. This would mean that in order to cool your home, the AC has to work round the clock. The same thing will happen to your heating system during the winter. This is why you need to take proper measures and insulate your home.

The first step is to check the different areas of your house. There are certain areas where air is likely to escape. These are the windows, the doors, the attic, the basement and the walls. You need to check these areas to be able to assess the work you will need to complete.

You will need to check the materials used for your window. You need to have double pane windows, at least. If you donít, it is time to reconsider replacing it. You may consult your contractor for a more energy efficient material. You should also inspect the caulking for your both windows and doors. Make sure that everything is intact. Check the weather stripping of your door as well.

Another area you should look into is the attic. This is one of the most effective ways of trapping the heat or the cool air inside as most of the air escapes through the attic. If it is properly insulated, it will block the air from going out. You can do this by sealing any openings. You can use several materials when using them.

Finally, you have to deal with walls as air can escape through them. Check for any cracks or small holes. Do not ignore small cracks. Small cracks can add up to a massive hole that can be passage for air to escape. You can locate them through specialized kits available in the market. You can also use your hand to locate these small cracks. Use your palm to feel any air coming in from outside. Mark these areas to make it easier to seal.

If you have not inspected your home for a while, contact a professional to make an assessment. There are also do-it-yourself kits available in the market. After checking your home, make sure that you attend to its needs and seal the drafts and holes as well as installing the right insulating material. Make sure that you check the areas that would most likely leak air. These are the doors, windows, attic, basement and walls. Proper insulation will not only heat or cool your home better, it will also help you save a lot of money.
