You know that you need good credit if you want the best deals on loans, car insurance, and other financial products. A good credit score can open the door to different opportunities, as well as save you hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars. However, many of us make mistakes that result in a credit score that is lower than we would like. In these cases, improving your credit becomes extremely important.
As you work to improve your credit, it is important to avoid the biggest mistake of credit repair: Giving up too soon.
Why Do People Give Up on Credit Repair?
Improving your credit score is not something you can do overnight. As a result, many people make the mistake of giving up before they reach their goals. Giving up too soon, though, can be a huge mistake. If you give up on your credit, you are basically condemning yourself to years of paying more than you should, and it could cost you big in lost opportunities.
Unfortunately, many unscrupulous hucksters try to convince consumers that they can see instant improvements to a credit score. The truth, though, is that the quickest improvements can take as many as 30 days to manifest. In some cases, it can take months of work to see substantial improvement to your credit score – as many as nine months or more, depending on your credit situation when you start.
How to Permanently Improve Your Credit Score
The unfortunate truth is that you cannot improve your credit score overnight. Anyone who promises “instant” results is either lying, or using illegal methods to give your credit score a temporary boost. If illegal methods are used, you will see your credit score plummet after a short period of time. This is not the way to truly improve your credit score. If you want to see permanently better credit score, you should do the following:
Begin making all of your payments on time and in full: The single most important item contributing to your credit score is your payment history. Make your payments on time and pay what you owe (or the minimum), and you will begin to build a better credit history.
Pay down some of your debt: You can improve your credit score by paying down some of your debt. Debt pay down results in a larger amount of available credit, and this can help you improve your credit score.
Slow down on credit inquiries: Reduce the number of times you apply for credit. Wait until you have paid down a good portion of your debt, and wait until you are making on-time payments. The fewer credit applications you put in, the better your credit score will be. Eventually you will want a good credit card, but you should be careful about what you apply for, and when you apply for it.
Fix errors on your credit report: If you see there are inaccurate items on your credit report, it could be dragging down your credit score.
Practice good financial habits: You can do a good job with your credit score if you practice generally good financial habits. Stick to a budget, live within your means, and prepare for the future.
After a few months, you will see positive changes to your credit score. If you keep up with your program for nine months to a year, you can see solid progress. Keep with it for two or three years (especially important if you have been through a foreclosure or bankruptcy), and you could see some very good improvements to your credit score.
