When it comes time to sell or rent out your condo or loft, staging is one of the most important aspects of getting a deal done. It’s all about helping potential buyers or renters picture themselves in your condo or loft. That’s hard for them to do if the space is empty, but if you already have moved, you probably don’t want to leave your furniture. What to do? Find somewhere to buy cheap furniture for the sole purpose of staging your place. It will cost you a little bit of money up front, but the payoff in the end will be worth it.

Following are five places to check for affordable furniture for staging.

Garage sales

Garage sales can be great places to find furniture, but you better get there early. If there is a good deal to be had, you can bet it will be gone if you wait too long. Similar to garage sales are estate sales. Stumble on these early enough and you may find a set of all the furniture you need at a pretty affordable price.

Scratch and dent stores

At scratch and dent stores, there’s no question what you will get: furniture that is scratched or dented. But that does not mean you shouldn’t check. Oftentimes, the imperfections are not particularly noticeable. And even if they are, is there a way to position the furniture in your loft or condo so the scratches and dents wouldn’t be readily apparent?

Family and friends

You never know if family or friends have extra furniture until you ask. Maybe they just got new furniture and haven’t got rid of the old stuff yet. Maybe they are planning to buy new furniture but haven’t got around to it. Your inquiry could be the push they need. Or, perhaps they have extra furniture and wouldn’t mind letting you borrow it for a while. Again, you don’t know unless you ask. And borrowing furniture will save you some money, too.

Closeout sales

Many furniture stores have back rooms with their closeout items. You may not find furniture sets, and you probably will not be able to get any warranty protection, but if all you’re using it for is staging – and you can find pieces that work – then what’s to lose?

Discount warehouses

These types of stores have a variety of items, and you can sometimes find good furniture, too. It comes from a variety of places – businesses that have gone out of business, overturned trucks, buildings where there have been fires, along with many others – but you can sometimes find good stuff. Again, you’re not going to get a warranty or a wide selection, but you’ll pay a heck of a lot less than retail.
