Tile installation in your home could create a dramatic appearance to it. Tiles look clean, beautiful and they are easy on the maintenance. Additionally, tiles could provide a timeless appearance to your home.
When installing tiles in your home, the materials you will need include hammer, sponges, tile nippers, ceramic tile, eye protection, rubber float, cement baker board if applicable, tile saw or cutter, buckets, grout, notched trowel, square and tape measure. Below are eight steps on how to install tiles in your home.
The first thing that you have to do is to measure the width and height of the area where you want to cover with tiles, then divide the area according to the size of tiles you are going to use. It is necessary to purchase extra tiles because there is as tendency that they would break during the installation process and it might be hard for you to get exactly the right style and kind of tiles that match the ones you have.
Clean the area where you want to install tiles and let it dry completely. If you will be installing tiles around electrical outlets, make sure to turn the power off to the outlet and remove the cover plate.
Lay out the tiles patterns first and maximize the number of tiles you will use so you do not spend more time cutting half and partial tiles.
Apply the recommended adhesive with the use of a notched trowel to a small area and then set the first tile in place by pressing firmly towards the adhesive. Make sure it is level, then insert spaces at corners and apply the second tile. Start work from the first row moving up to the second row and continue until the whole area is covered.
Use a tile cutter or saw to cut partial tiles then cut them to shape using a tile nipper to cut all small tile pieces.
Remove excess adhesive after installing the tiles and let the adhesive dry overnight or according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
When the adhesive has completely dried, remove the spacers and mix grout according to the directions of the manufacturer. Apply grout with the use of a rubber float and push down on the cracks between the tiles. Wipe away excess grout by passing the float over all the tiles.
When the grout has dried, wipe away remaining haze if there is by using sponge and clean water.
Installing tiles in your home is easy to do as long as you follow the instructions carefully and you have all the materials you are going to use. Tile installation can be a DIY or by a professional contractor. Nevertheless, if you want to do it on your own, you can do so with the help of one helper perhaps. Keep in mind that installing tiles in your home makes it more beautiful and helps boost the value of your property if you decide to sell it in the future.
