We are all responsible for our environment. This is why we need to take part in whatever change that will bring positively impact Mother Nature. There have been many efforts to help save our environment or improve its current state. Even the home building industry is doing its part. Home building is one of the major contributors to the deterioration of the natural resources because of the materials used and the processes involved in the construction.

In order to reduce, and hopefully eliminate the adverse effects of home building in our environment, the LEED certification is formed. This has significantly influenced how builders and homeowners see and manage their projects.

What is LEED certification?

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is formed by the US Green Building Council. The LEED certification serves as a rating system for green method in constructing homes and buildings. This includes the design and the construction processes of the project. Renovations of the property are also included.

The certification will look into the different aspects of both human and the environmental health. These are as follows:

  • Water Savings
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Sustainable Site Development
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Materials Selection

The above items suggest that the construction processes and materials be more eco-friendly. Processes should be improved to conserve water. This means the waste should be minimized or removed. Moreover, the use of energy should be considered. Energy efficient tools should be used and properties should be designed to reduce energy consumption. Builders and designers could take advantage of the wind to provide a cooler environment. The use of natural light should also be taken into consideration.

The site as well as the materials should be thought of as well. The materials need to be sustainable and should not produce toxic wastes. Moreover, it is essential that the indoor environment be in good condition. The air quality has to be maintained for the sake of the people living there.

What are its benefits?

There are several benefits of the LEED certification. One major benefit is that it provides a better option of how to construct buildings and homes. Guidelines are given and standards are set so that builders and property owners can improve their construction processes.

How is the property certified?

There are four levels of certification. First, there is certified, followed by silver, gold and then platinum. Platinum is the highest level. Such levels are given depending on the points earned by the property. In order to be considered, the property owner has to apply for the certification and submit the required documents for review. A third party will check on the property to make sure that guidelines were followed.

There are different ways to help improve the condition of our environment today. One is by following the guidelines provided by LEED. This is helpful not only to get the certification, but also on improving the state of our property. Following the guidelines and standards set, makes our home healthier to live in. This also reduces the energy consumption, which makes the monthly bills cheaper.
