When looking at flooring options for a family room, a good place to start is to assess how the family uses the room. For example, a family room with several small children is used entirely different than a family room in a house full of adults. Typically, in either scenario, a family room tends to be a very active room, which means that it has a lot of traffic flowing through it. Finding the right flooring for the room can make it easy to maintain while keeping it attractive.
How a Family Operates
Take a look at the family room before settling on one particular type of flooring and think about how it works: Notice where the traffic patterns are and think about how the room is used. Children and pets are going to need a more durable surface than older less active adults.
Adding a tile floor to the family room may make sense with small children, because it is waterproof, and they can run their toys across the surface without any problem. Consider, though, that a softer and warmer option may be durable carpet, especially if small children spend a lot of time playing on the floor. Or, a hardwood floor may be the perfect middle of the road solution, because it is less hard and warmer than a tile floor but not quite as soft and warm as carpeting. Hardwood flooring can be refinished if it is ever damaged, and it is durable in high traffic areas.
Because of its softness and warmth, carpeting is probably the most popular flooring option for most family rooms. Since it comes in just about any color and texture imaginable, it can also be used to greatly enhance the décor of a room. Some styles of carpeting are more durable than others, like looped or textured carpeting and they work particularly well in parts of the room that get a lot of foot traffic. When opting for carpeting in a family room, the carpet padding is as important as the carpeting itself, so always opt for a high quality padding to place beneath the carpeting. Quality padding will extend the life of the carpeting. When looking for a good color for the carpeting, select a medium tone, which will keep the room looking light and open without showing dirt and wear too easily.
Look at Laminate
Another really good option for a family room floor is laminate flooring. This type of flooring looks very much like hardwood, but it is even more durable and easy to maintain. Simply sweep or dry mop to clean it, and it never needs to be waxed or refinished. However, in homes with large pets or small children laminate flooring can get scratched, and since it cannot be refinished there is no way to remove the scratches from the floor's surface.
One of the more classic selections for a family room floor is hardwood flooring, which withstands high traffic without a problem. It is easy to maintain with sweeping and dry mopping, though it does need to be waxed from time to time to keep it looking good. Hardwood flooring can also be refinished if the surface is ever scratched or damaged.
Probably the sturdiest floor surface around is tile. It comes in many different colors, styles and materials, so it is possible to find a tile that complements the décor of just about any room imaginable. Since tile is resistant to stains and scratching, it makes a good family room flooring option for a large, busy family. Unfortunately, tile floors tend to be hard and cold, though this problem can easily be solved with a couple of colorful, area rugs.
