Teen girls are usually into style and fashion and many teen girls would be as excited about redecorating their bedroom as they are about shopping for a hot trendy pair of boots or new jeans. Enlisting your teen daughter’s help in redecorating her room will make your job easier, give you an opportunity to spend some quality time together and you are more likely to end up with a room design that she’ll love. The key to creating a great looking room is to design it around her personality and interests. Here are some ideas to explore together.

Preppy Plaid

Girls love plaids, and while they’re a classic, choosing plaids with trendy colors is the key to creating a hip look that she’ll love. Start with a bedspread or throw pillows to define a color theme for the room: For example, hot pink and lime green with white is a popular plaid color motif and it works perfectly against white walls or walls painted in a light shade of the pink or green. Should you decide to go with color on the wall, paint all the trim in crisp white. Mix in accents in solid pink and lime green to make the whole scheme pop. From pillows and throws to lamps, lampshades, wall art, bookends, alarm clocks and more, there are lots of items to choose from in these colors.

Bold Metallics

Many teen girls love the shimmer and glamour of metal and this is another fun look for a teen’s bedroom. Choose wall colors based on the metallic sheen of choice: For example, gray walls are perfect for silvery metallics, while chocolate brown or taupe is a rich counterpoint to copper or gold finishes. You can also opt for metallic wall paint; the most attractive effects are created with metallic washes applied over a similar color of paint. However, a little metallic paint goes a long way, so you may want to reserve this treatment for just one focal wall or for trim or accent touches on wood furniture and other accents. When it comes to fabrics, temper metallic fabrics with non-metallic: For example, chocolate brown curtain panels can be used over shimmering gold sheers. This will allow the metallic to peek through without seeming gaudy or overbearing. Whatever shade of metallic is chosen can also be echoed in wall art, lamps, photo and art frames, accessories and a glitzy overhead light fixture or small chandelier.

Girly Camouflage

Camouflage is not just for boys; in fact, pink camouflage is perfect for a girl who is sporty and adventurous. Pink camouflage looks great when mixed with neutral colors like tan and brown and even shades of green, so it is a great choice when walls are already painted in neutral tones. Mixing pink camouflage with green is a fun way to add a little jungle feel to a room; add wall posters featuring lions, cheetahs or elephants. Or go with an environmental “green” theme with green accents, pink camouflage and environmentally-conscious accents like bamboo window shades, bamboo furniture and cork flooring.
