Make Your Yard A Haven For Wildlife

Wherever we may live, be it a high-rise condo or a spacious family home surrounded by lush, mature gardens we can always attract a little bit of the great outdoors to our own backyard. What can be more rewarding than gazing out of a window and being met with the sight and sound of a dazzling songbird, or beautifully colored butterfly as it flits by?

With a little careful planning, we can all transform even the most modest corner of a yard or balcony into a place that encourages and welcomes some of our wild neighbors. If you wish to entice butterflies and birds into your very own habitat, the key to success is in the plants you choose. As well as making your outside area more aesthetically pleasing for human inhabitants, bright flowering plants will also attract all kinds of butterflies and jewel-like hummingbirds. If you have space, a few well-placed evergreen shrubs or small trees will also help create a safe haven for wild birds to feed or roost in.

If you are fortunate enough to have a sizeable garden or yard, you may like to consider planting some attractive berry-bearing plants such as Blue Elderberry, Hollyleaf Cherry or Toyon, providing energy-rich food for hungry birds. The flowers of the California Buckeye are legendary among west coast wildlife gardeners for their appeal to butterflies, especially those magnificent orange and black Monarchs.

If you wish to draw a wide variety of birds to your yard, it is a great idea to provide clean water. Birds require fresh water for drinking all year round, and also love to take a bath. Should you have the space available, why not build a pond? With the addition of a few native water plants, a pond will not only be an attractive feature, but should also attract frogs, salamanders and dragonflies.

Whether you have a large and verdant yard, a few feet of concrete or even just a window-box and a hanging basket, you can easily attract wild birds with the provision of food. A vast range of feeders are available in the stores these days, and a regular supply of seed, suet or nectar is sure to bring hungry, and grateful feathered diners returning to your home. Even common birds such as house finches, American robins and chickadees will brighten up any home owner's day. Among the most popular feeders are those provided for hummingbirds. Few people can resist the charms of these stunning little balls of energy, and a well-place nectar feeder will supply the birds with a welcome supplement to their diet and hours of entertainment for human observers!

You can further enhance your 'wild' space by providing nest boxes, which will give your local birds somewhere safe to raise their young. As well as knowing that you are helping the next generation, you will also be making sure that you have your very own natural, chemical-free pest controllers in the neighborhood. Baby birds consume an incredible amount of caterpillars and flower munching bugs and by encouraging them to nest close by, you will be doing all your plants a favor! Lots of birds will also eat midges and mosquitoes, so by encouraging them into your yard you will also be reducing the risk of irritating bites.

If you'd like to discover more about transforming your yard into a wildlife haven, a wealth of online help is available. Your local bookstore will also stock a number of useful books on the subject, allowing you to find ways for the whole family to enjoy the natural wonders in your own neighborhood.
