When working with small spaces, it's important to maximize every square inch to make the most of it. If you take a look at home décor websites or discussion boards, you'll find that making the most of one's storage options is a popular topic. If you have a small apartment space, here are some useful tips you can use to make the most of it.

Tip #1: Multi-Function and Multi-Purpose Furniture Pieces and Accessories are Key

If you live in a small apartment, choosing furniture pieces that can serve more than one purpose is a great way to maximize space. These versatile pieces are designed so that they can be used in more than one way, so you won't have to try to find room for two separate pieces. Choosing multi-purpose pieces is also a good way to economize on your decorating budget, since you'll need to purchase fewer separate items. After all, even if a multi-purpose item costs a bit more, it will still usually be less expensive than buying two separate pieces.

Tip #2: Don't Buy Pieces You Don't Really Need

If you think that you're automatically getting a good decorating bargain when you purchase inexpensive pieces, think again. After all, if you don't really need the item, then even a cheap price won't make it a good deal. If you have a tendency to purchase items simply because they are on sale, you might be wasting your precious apartment space. Instead of filling your space with unnecessary items, only purchase things that you really need. In a small apartment space, you won't have room to display unnecessary items - and you also won't have enough room to store them.

Tip #3: Reduce Clutter

If your small apartment is already filled with things you don't really need, it's time to do some serious de-cluttering. Take the time to assess the items you own. If you can't remember the last time you used an item, chances are you really don't need it. If you can simply get rid of some of your unnecessary items, you'll have more room for the items you really do need. There's nothing wrong with having a few decorative accessories or keepsakes. However, you should try to focus on keeping these items to a minimum. It's also important to find an efficient way to display decorative items. Wall décor is usually preferable to other decorating accessories, since it won't take up valuable floor or table space.

Tip #4: Organization is a Continuous Process

Once you've de-cluttered and organized your small apartment space, you might think that it was a one-time process. However, most people find that no matter how hard they try, over time they continue to accumulate more items. Pay close attention to the items you put in your home. If you get to the point where you feel that clutter is creeping back in, schedule a day for cleaning and organizing. Kitchen countertops, closets and other storage areas all have a tendency to get out of control if you don't stay constantly vigilant. By keeping your apartment neat, organized and tidy, you'll be making the most of your small space.
