Bedside tables, also called “nightstands”, are practical and nearly indispensable in the bedroom. They provide a place to set a lamp, a glass of water and other necessities, as well as decorative flourishes that give your bedroom personality. While the tables you choose must be functional, the style you choose also says something about your own decor preferences and individuality. Here are some tips for creating style and visual balance with bedside tables.
Balance and Scale
If you sleep alone, you may feel that one bedside table is enough and in reality, if your bedroom is on the small side using just one table may a good way to conserve precious floor space. However, in most cases you’ll create a more balanced look with a table on both sides of the bed. You also need to consider the height of the tables in relation to the height of the bed; many of today’s beds are higher due to thicker mattresses and pillow top designs. The table should be high enough for you to comfortably reach the lamp switch and alarm clock; you should also be able to easily see the alarm clock when in bed.
While many people purchase a pair of matching bedside tables as part of a complete “bedroom suite” of furniture, you don’t have to have everything perfectly matched in the room. As a matter of fact, bedside tables present an opportunity to bring an eclectic touch to the room that adds some designer flair and personality. There are also times when the layout of the room may make it more advantageous to choose two styles: For example, if there is more room on one side of the bed than the other, you might choose a square bedside table with a drawer and two shelves for one side and a small two-tiered table, like a candlestick table, for the other side. Of course, there is nothing wrong with having two matching nightstands; they can add symmetry and style to the room. And remember that while the nightstands can match each other, they don’t necessarily have to match the bed and dresser as well.
There are as many styles of bedside tables as there are decorative styles and choosing the best one for your room is a matter of personal style preference and the overall look of the room. Wicker tables or stands work nicely with cottage or country looks, while glossy finishes or glass top tables with modern geometric shapes add a decidedly contemporary look. Tables in mahogany, pine or oak can complement looks from traditional to nautical; or choose an antique table or night stand to bring a vintage touch to your room. In fact, you can get a great textural look with a stack of vintage suitcases masquerading as a nightstand and the inside of each suitcase provides hidden storage of out-of-season clothing, trinkets and more. Whether you choose wrought iron or bamboo, painted shabby chic finishes, or high gloss enamels, consider your nightstands as an opportunity to proclaim your stylistic individuality.
