Wallpaper is a wonderful medium for adding distinctive color, pattern and style to any room and with so many styles available, it’s not difficult to find a variety of wallpaper that perfectly suits your style. If you’ve never hung wallpaper before, here are 3 steps that will give you spectacular results.

  1. Measure the Room and Mark the Walls

In order to purchase enough wall paper, you need to know the size of the room and the amount of surface to be covered. This is especially important if you are ordering custom wallpaper, but even with off-the-shelf varieties, it’s important to buy enough paper all at once so that dye lots match perfectly.

  2. First measure the height and width of each wall; multiply those numbers together for the square footage of each wall. Then just add up each wall’s square footage for a total. The personnel in the store will be able to advise you regarding how much paper is needed. They will take the “repeat” of the pattern into account. The “repeat” is the repeat of the pattern and it determines how much wall paper will be wasted in order to match the pattern. Once you have the rolls of wallpaper in hand, measure a straight vertical line in the center of one wall, making sure that it is plumb. This will be your guideline and where you will begin.

  3. Apply Wallpaper Paste or Activate the Adhesive

With pre-pasted wall paper, you simply activate the adhesive by soaking the wallpaper in warm water as directed by the manufacturer. If the paper is not pre-pasted, you have to apply the adhesive yourself; special adhesive is also needed if you are applying a wallpaper border on top of vinyl wallpaper.

Cut the wallpaper to the needed length, allowing extra at each end for trimming. “Book” or fold the paper with the adhesive sides facing together then soak it as recommended; allow it to rest as the manufacturer recommends so that the adhesive becomes active. If pasting the paper, lay it out right-side-down on a clean work surface, apply the adhesive and book the paper as directed above. In either case, work with only one strip of wallpaper at a time.

  4. Hang the Paper
When the first strip is ready, line it along your guideline and unroll it into place, working top to bottom and smoothing it out with a lightly damp sponge. Trim the top and bottom edges so that they are straight and clean; a razor cutter and straight edge work well for this job. Before cutting subsequent strip, measure the length of the wall again to adjust for any minor differences and then cut the paper making sure to take the placement of the pattern into account. Use a seam roller to flatten the seams between each strip. Use the razor to trim around any trim, windows and doors. Remove any light switch and electrical outlet covers, trim around the openings and then replace the covers.
