Design Elements of Florida Homes

Homes in Florida tend to be built in order to embrace the three S's: sunshine, surf and sand. It is for these reasons that many people flock to Florida to live in their dream houses in the first place. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for home builders to capitalize on this interest and build homes that enhance the experience of these three focal points.

It should come as no surprise then to note that the most popular home styles in Florida are in the European, Mediterranean, and Spanish villa styles, as these homes are popular in the sun-soaked areas of the their respective geographic areas. Even if a home builder does not design a home that is strictly one of the above styles, you will often still see small touches of these styles in their designs. Regardless of the overall style of the home, you will notice that most of them are built to be comfortable in the warm Florida climate.

For many of these homes, the focus will be on an open floor plan with living areas that are spacious and roomy. With these large and open spaces, the circulation and ventilation of the indoor spaces is able to occur freely. Roofs of clay tiles shelter homes with stucco exteriors and allow the living spaces inside to stay cool and dry.

Inside, you will be pleasantly surprised by the Old World feel of the design. This is accomplished by the use of marble floors, arched doorways throughout the house, and stone columns. In homes that contain more than one level, you might find domed or cathedral ceilings, arched windows, and curved staircases with balconies that overlook the scenery below.

In many of these Italian, Mediterranean, and Spanish flavored home designs, you will see cut stone featured throughout both the interior and exterior of the home. This element offers an upscale feel that is steeped in elegance throughout the entire house. It also lends itself to being a great transition piece between the interior and exterior.

Courtyards or archways that allow the main entrance to be shielded partially from view are often seen in the popular home designs in Florida. If the home design features a courtyard, this serves multiple purposes. It offers beautiful views when you are looking out of the windows that face it even as it offers you an element of privacy. You can also use your courtyard to relax in during the cooler parts of the day.
