If your child is an "only child," you probably already know how much fun designing his or her bedroom can be. If your child is older, he or she might even enjoy helping to plan their bedroom's design and decorations. Because there are so many options to choose from, sometimes it can be tricky to decide on only one design. If a new bed is part of your plans to redecorate his or her room, a double bed is generally the best choice.

Why Choose a Double Bed?

There are numerous reasons why a double bed is preferable for a child as compared to a traditional twin size bed. It's a fact of life that a child simply needs more bed space as he or she grows. In fact, many teenage boys find that their feet hang off the end of a twin mattress, which can be quite uncomfortable. In addition to the added width, a double bed will also provide your child with extra length. If your child doesn't grow out of their bed, then you won't have to eventually purchase another mattress and bed frame when they get older.

Dress Things up a Bit

Although a double bed is often the best choice while buying your child's bed, it might seem a bit too large when he or she is still quite young. If you want to make their big bed look and feel cozier and more their size, there are some techniques you can use. You can use a bed tent to create a quiet, cozy and unique area for your child. The enclosed look and feel of the tent tends to make younger children feel secure and snug. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find a double bed tent in local stores. If you can't find one, try looking for children's bedding specialty retailers online.

Storage Space

Of course, a larger bed naturally means more storage space underneath. Although you can certainly utilize the storage area under a twin size bed, the space is rather limited. When your child has a double bed, he or she will be able to store their toys, shoes and even off-season clothing underneath. When choosing an under bed storage container for your child, look for one that is durable and easily washable.

Off to College

Once your child has grown up and headed off to college, you'll be able to transform his or her former bedroom into a handy guest room. Since you already have a double bed, you won't automatically have to purchase a larger bed as part of the room transformation. A double bed will be perfectly adequate for an adult overnight guest. As an added advantage, a double bed in your guest room won't take up as much space as a queen or king size bed. If your child stays at home during college breaks, he or she will be able to sleep in your new guest room.

If you have an only child, a double bed can be one of your most versatile furniture options. By purchasing a double bed, your child's sleeping needs will be taken care of perfectly. Plus, you'll already have an adequately sized bed for your guest room after he or she grows up.
