Everyone knows that preparing your home for sale can be a long and arduous task. Once you're done cleaning and freshening up every space, you might want to think about updating some of that old furniture you've had since you got married. If you plan to buy furniture for the new house, buy it now! That's always the first, and best, option. But if you are planning on taking it with you and making it work for another few years, there are plenty of options for making it fresher, cleaner, and more modern-looking than it was before.
Couches are the place where I usually like to start. If they're still in good shape, but have more dirt and odor than you'd like, consider having them professionally cleaned. It's always a gamble to clean couch-type furniture at home because the chances of not doing it correctly, or not doing a fabulous job, are pretty high. Usually, professional cleaning companies, the same people who clean your carpets, can do such a good job that your pieces will look almost like new. I've even seen them remove nail polish from an upholstered couch. It's pretty hard to beat that with a DIY job!
If the couches still have big, bright prints that may not be to everyone's taste, it could be time to think about slip covers. You can usually find these at department stores, but I have found better prices and sizes online. If your furniture speaks louder than the room itself, slipcovers are a must. The upside is that, compared to buying a new piece or reupholstering, slip covers are very cost-effective and can give you many more years out of your tired 1970s couch.
Older or worn-out dining room tables can be refinished in the garage if someone in your house is even just a little bit handy, and it can be done for a very minimal cost. Failing that, there is always the option of using a muted table cloth and slip covers for the chairs. Slip covers can update even the oldest looking chairs into modern masterpieces, but remember to always stick with neutral colours.
Coffee tables and side tables can also be freshened up yourself with a quick refinish. If that isn't possible, consider placing a fitted piece of plastic or glass right over the top of the table in order to neutralize a brighter colour, or refresh beaten-up or old-looking wood.
To compete in today's market, the whole house has to look its best. What many people today don't know is that we're selling a lifestyle oftentimes more than we are selling a house. So make sure that the lifestyle you're putting on the market looks move-in ready!
