Slate Blue: A Cool Color to Enhance a Fireplace

If it’s been a while since you’ve decorated your fireplace, it may be looking a little tired. Instead of just changing the candles or buying new candlesticks, consider giving it an update. Your fireplace doesn’t have to be in a state of disrepair or horribly out of date to benefit from a makeover. Just by adding a fresh new color, like slate blue, you can add character or a fresh contemporary face to your fireplace. Here’s how to use slate blue to give your fireplace a fresh new look.

Versatile, Beautiful Slate Blue Tile

If you want to give your fireplace an update and a fresh dose of color, consider adding slate blue tile to the face of the fireplace. Tiles with a glossy finish will reflect the fire’s glow. You can choose tiles in slate blue to match any type of decor, from traditional to contemporary. Slate blue tile mixes beautifully with both traditional colors like cream and gold or contemporary colors such as black and gray. Small mosaic tiles in slate blue can have a traditional finish or can be found in contemporary glass tile styles. You can also find larger tiles, patterned tiles, tiles with embossed patterns and any variety of tile styles that incorporate slate blue.

Paint the Mantel

Instead of tiling, you could simply paint the mantel and the wood face of your fireplace. First, lightly sand the wood and wipe away the debris with a slightly damp rag or tack cloth. Apply primer to the wood and then follow with your slate blue paint in an eggshell or matte finish; a glossy paint would be too shiny. If you want to create an antiqued look for a country or American colonial decor, you can use a crackled finish or a faux finish to give it an aged appearance. You can also use slate blue paint to add a stenciled or stamped design to a fireplace and mantel that is already finished in a light color like white, cream or tan; two or three shades of slate blue can be combined to add shadowing and depth to the design.

Accessorize in Slate Blue

The easiest way to bring the beauty of slate blue to your fireplace is to introduce it with accessories. The area above the mantel is the most visible part of the room and should feature a beautiful focal point. A modern wall decor, such as a contemporary abstract painting or metal wall art in slate blue, is a great way to bring some excitement to this space. Figurines, mantel clocks and framed photographs can echo the slate blue in the wall decor or feature complementary colors. Candles and candlesticks as well as candle accessories like hurricanes or glass cylinders can include a rim of slate blue. There are many colors that mix beautifully with slate blue: Cream, tan, gold, pale yellow, white, gray, silver and other shades of blue and green are beautiful choices; you can also shake things up with bolder accents colors such as coral, tangerine or bright yellow.
