A room divider is a great way to add function to a room; for example you can split a large great room into a family room and an office area. A screen is also a great way to add dimension to a room, even if you are not dividing the space into two different areas: For example, a screen set diagonally in a corner softens the harsh angles and makes the room feel more intimate.
While room dividers are extremely practical and you can find dividers that are very stylish, you might want to add a little style and personality to a standard room screen or divider. Here are three ideas that do just that.
Wall of Words
A folding divider that has fabric panels can add a beautiful element of pattern and softness to a room; but if you want to make it fun and funky instead, try this idea for a family room/kitchen area divider. Remove the fabric from the frames and replace it with long panels of butcher paper. Be sure to pull them taut so that you can write on them without causing the paper to sag or belly. Add a hanging pocket to hold a variety of colored markers. You can mark off an area for each family member if desired or use it to write schedules, menus, reminders and to-do lists. You can even doodle if you like or encourage the kids to create their own artwork! When the paper is used up, just replace the sheet and start all over again.
If a room seems a bit on the small side, strategically placed mirrors can be used to make it seem larger and brighter. Rather than use a solid divider, use mirrors to make the space seem bigger. For example, a cube style divider or bookcase could include mirrors on the backside or inside the back of each cube to make the area seem twice as large. You can also mount mirrors on a standing screen as long as it is sturdy and not in danger of tipping over. Identical, evenly space mirrors will offer a modern look, while mirrors of different shapes and sizes support a fun, eclectic or cottage look. Either approach will add the illusion of depth and spaciousness to a room.
On the Wild Side
If you love looks that are somewhat exotic, incorporate animal prints and feathers to cross over to the wild side. Start with a folding screen made of rattan, wicker or bamboo and then hang African style masks on the screen. You can also add feathers and faux animal prints as accents to give the screen a multi-dimensional feel. A great throw in a zebra or leopard print, for example, would look smashing casually draped over the screen. Carry this style of decorating throughout the space, letting the screen serve as a focal point for the entire room.
