Whether you are a first time homebuyer or a seasoned real estate investor the more you know the better off you will be. You have heard the saying, “Knowledge is Power”, well it is true. The more you know and understand about the real estate market and home buying process the better off you will be in making good decisions and protecting your wealth.

Before you start looking for a new home there are some critical items that need to be addressed. For example, what do you want in a home and what are your goals? The more planning you do upfront eases the entire process and exposes problem areas early on when buying a home. For starters consider the following questions:

  • Will the home be a rental or do you plan on living there?
  • How long do you plan on living in the home?
  • What are your minimum bedroom requirements?
  • Do you need special access? ie: wheel chair, hand rails
  • Do you want single level or multiple levels home? Stairs can be problems for some people and families.
  • Is there a specific school zone or neighborhood you desire to live in?
  • Why do you want to buy now?
  • Do you have a time frame for purchasing a home?
  • Do you have the money for a down payment?
  • How is your credit? Will the bank lend to you at a reasonable rate?

As you can see there are many things to consider when buying a house. The list above serves as an example or starting point. You may add and subtract from it as your situation dictates. The goal is to plan in advance and know what your needs and limitations are.

Compile a list of questions and answers to determine if buying a home is really what you want to do. If so, find yourself a lending institution that will offer the best deal on a home loan and ally yourself with a knowledgeable real estate professional in your area to help sort through the homes that don’t fit your criteria. Real estate agents also serve as a well of information and will guide you through the home buying process.
