Thanking Clients: A Little Gesture Goes a Long Way

One of the greatest opportunities that a real estate agent can have in his or her relationship with clients is when the deal is all signed and the sale is finished. While, of course, the lead up to this point is certainly important, there is a great potential once the sale is finalized to make a great and lasting impression.

This opportunity is, of course, to thank the client and just like your mother told you when you were a child, thank you notes are a great way to thank people!

The reasons to send clients a thank you note are many. If you help them sell their home, send them a thank you note. If they hire you to sell their home but in the time you work together the home doesn't get a buyer, send them a thank you for having hired you. If you help someone buy a home, even if you aren't successful, send them a note.

Do you see a trend here? Anytime you work with a client, even if you aren't successful, send them a thank you note for having picked you. Likewise, if someone sends you a referral they should get a thank you as well.

Any chance that you can leave a customer or a potential customer feeling good about an interaction with them is a good opportunity to send a thank you.

Thank you notes should be sent out within a week of whatever interaction you're thanking them for. Ideally, send them within a day or so because then the experience is fresh in their mind as well as yours.

There are a few things that you should avoid when sending out thank you notes; do not ever email your thank you notes. Likewise, do not print out thank you notes on your computer! Nothing says "impersonal" like a note that takes you no time or effort to send.

Handwritten thank you notes are always a more valuable option than either an email or printed version. It is also well worth the cost to include a token gift along with the thank you note. For a client who's just purchased a home in a new area, a nice gesture would be a gift certificate to a good restaurant to help them get accustomed to the area; another thank you gift that is usually quite welcome is a bottle of wine.

One of the best thank you gifts from a realtor's perspective is flowers. Flowers will remind the recipient of you every time they see them. This can provide an extra bonus if you send your "thank you"s to a client at their workplace where they are likely to leave them at their workspace to enjoy and most likely tell their coworkers about their experience with you.

The most important aspect sending thank you notes and gifts to clients is that they feel valued and you show your appreciation by adding that personal touch. Not surprising at all that your mother was right and a hand written note makes for the best thank you.
