The NARPM® Governmental Affairs Committee felt it was important to notify you of a serious product recall that was announced on July 9th. Kidde, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has announced the recall of their Model PI2000 dual sensor smoke alarms. An electrostatic discharge can damage the unit, causing it not to warn consumers of a fire. This recall is for hardwired alarms only, not battery operated alarms.
An estimated 94,000 alarms in the U.S. and 10,000 in Canada are affected by this recall. The alarms were sold at retail, department, and hardware stores and through electrical distributors nationwide from August 2008 through May 2009 for between $30 and $40.
The alarms can be identified by two buttons, “HUSH” and “PUSH AND HOLD TO TEST WEEKLY,” which are located on the front/center of the alarm. The model number and date code are on the back of the smoke alarm. Only date codes 2008 Aug 01 through 2009 May 04 are included in this recall.
If you suspect one of these alarms was installed in a property you manage, please contact Kidde on their toll free recall hotline at 877-524-2086 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit their product recall webpage.
Kidde will replace the Affected Units with its 120V AC hardwire with battery back-up smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. Replacement Units are free and will usually be shipped within five business days of your call to Kidde’s dedicated 1-877-524-2086 number. Do NOT remove the Affected Unit from service until you receive the replacement unit.
