Managing a kitchen well is not an easy task and one of the most important aspects of good kitchen management is to make sure that your kitchen is safe. A clean kitchen is always a safe kitchen and hence cleanliness and hygiene form basic criteria as far as safe kitchens are concerned. Of the many household accidents that happen through out the world, majority of them happen in the kitchen. Some basic safety tips as far as kitchen is concerned are listed below.
Electricity and fire form a very lethal combination and is a sure shot recipe for disaster. Make sure all wires, cords and plugs on your appliances are not frayed and that the plugs have 3-prong grounded connections. Also, ensure that your appliances are not kept too near the water source or sink. Splashing of water on appliances can lead to short circuits or shocks. Never use extension cords. Chords can cause accidents as you or any other member can trip on these, and such accidents can hurt a lot. If you have children at home, childproof locks are a necessity as far as kitchen appliances and plug points are concerned. The same can be used to secure your cooking gas cylinders as well, as children have the habit of playing with the knobs on these, accidentally turning it on and causing fires and cylinder bursts.
While cooking, absolute attention has to be paid to the pots and pans which are on the stove. Make sure to turn off burners as soon as you take the pot off. Leaving burners burning can lead to disasters. Clothing is another aspect that has to be taken care while you are cooking. Full sleeves have to be certainly avoided. Care also has to be taken while choosing upholstery for the kitchen. Always use cotton and such thick materials and never nylon or such thinner cloth as these tend to catch fire very easily. Keep dish towels, pot holders and oven mitts away from the stove.
Fire generating substances like match box and lighters are another source for accidents as children tend to develop a fascination towards these and try using these. Always keep these in places where children cannot reach. If you are using candles in the kitchen, don’t leave the room while they’re burning. Make sure they are in a safe place and are in flame proof containers. Scalding is a very common accident and can occur from hot steam as well. Be careful when lifting lids from hot food. As a precautionary measure, always keep a fire extinguisher handy and also keep the numbers of emergency services where they are easily noticed. You should also make sure that all cleaning chemicals are kept out of reach of children, to avoid any untoward incident.
