There are many ways to have a home landscape that would still comply to and help your local environment. The easiest way would be having native plants as the majority of your landscaped garden. These are very easy to maintain as they already have adapted to the local area’s soil and weather. In using these plants, you could even help maintain the wildlife. Plus the native plants are less expensive than the imported ones.

In finding out which plants are native and suitable for your local environment. An easy way would be through contacting local nurseries. Any personnel could be of help to you. They could give you a lot of information about the native plants in your area. They could also give you advice how to plant them and what are their requirements for growing. You could also ask about ideal landscape patterns that would fit your space.

Here are some landscape patterns that may incorporate different types of plants:

Container gardening

If you have small space for elaborate landscaping, you may want to have container gardening. You may think that landscaping could only be achieved with plant beds. But you could have a garden with levels, dimensions and plant variety with the use of potted plants and containers. There are advantages in having a container garden. Almost all sorts of plants could grow faster in containers. This is so due to the controlled environment you would provide your plants. You could easily maintain the watering schedule and weed pulling. You could also maximize the small amount of soil you have as containers guarantee heightened soil moisture due to enclosed spaces. Then the roots could grow faster.

With regards to the levels and dimensions, you could achieve such by having plants in containers with different heights and growth. You could choose full grown potted plants and shrubs and also have small native plants. You could stack small plants in a rack so you could have more depth. Also, you could have more dimension by having different sizes of pots. Some pots could accommodate at least five small plants.

You could also maximize creativity by using containers of varied materials, shapes and colors. Some containers could be woven baskets, plastic or clay. By using such pots, you could even have a multicolored garden. Plus you are creating the illusion of having a massive garden with great landscape pattern.

Physic gardening

This gardening and landscaping style could be both for aesthetic and medicinal purposes. Physic gardens, or then-labeled as apothecary gardens, are known to have landscapes reminiscent of the 15th century arts and culture. These could have the combination of manicured lawns and wild growth of plants. The plants used here are from herbs to shrubs with beautiful flowers and medicinal qualities. However, if you opt for this type of landscaped garden, you still have to consider the plants allowed to be grown according to the local area’s codes.

Since this type of gardening has been used for ancient medicinal practices, you could even recreate the feeling of the old world as its landscape is one of the oldest patterns in the world.

Potager gardening

This landscape type has its inspiration roots from the French. This was initially meant to be maintained as a kitchen garden, meaning the plants used are mainly herbs and edible produce, which are also visually stimulating. For you who have huge spaces, this landscaping style could be appropriate for you. The plants are usually and rigidly arranged depending on the colors and height growth so more dimension and levels could be created.

This type of gardening has two subtypes that both have distinct landscapes. The first one is the cottage garden. The landscape for this one is easy to maintain (or the lack of it) because you would allow the plants to grow wildly. This is reminiscent of country-style landscapes, hence its name implies. The other one is called the knot gardening style. Its landscape style is the opposite of the first one. All the plants should be kept in manicured form so that elaborate patterns and designs could be maintained, which is why it is called a knot garden. This landscape is popular among royalty gardens in Europe.

There are other landscape patterns you could use for your own garden, like Japanese Zen, boxwood, geometric patterns, cobble paver and others. Just be sure that whatever you would choose, you should comply with local codes. With these suggestions, you can fully enjoy your garden landscape design.
