Grass or gravel? This is always the first question that comes up when you plan to renovate your lawn or even build a new lawn. This is because a lawn is always the first step towards beautification of a house, whether you are renovating it or building a new one. There are a few aspects that you need to take into consideration before you finalize the surface that is required to be put in your front lawn.
Maintenance related aspect is one of the most important aspects that need to be considered. However good your lawn looks in the beginning, if you are not in a position to maintain it in the same state for the preceding years, it is not worth all the trouble in the beginning. Grass is high maintenance and needs a constant supply of water to keep it green and healthy. Otherwise it would fade very quickly and you would be left with just dried grass. If you think that water could be an issue, it is better to opt for gravel.
Gravel also has its share of maintenance activity. The biggest problem with gravel is the easy displacement that it can be subjected to. Smaller gravel stones get stuck in footwear and reach the interiors very fast. This only leads to increased cleaning activity. In the case of grass, rains can be a spoil sport as the entire lawn could get muddy if the rains are too heavy. And this means that you will have to deal with muddy shoe marks in the drawing room.
Though gravel is low maintenance when compared with grass, gravel has certain practical difficulties associated with them. If your area has frequent tornadoes or strong winds, gravel can be dangerous as it tends to fly in the wind and cause damage and accidents, especially on glass. Gravel can also be particularly harsh on children who tend to play in the lawn as they can fall and hurt themselves on gravel.
The use that you shall be putting your lawn into is another aspect that needs to be evaluated very seriously. If the lawn is just a recreational or play area, grass is best suited as it gives the space a very calm and soothing look, apart from making it comfortable for use. If the yard is being used to sit and dine or drink, or even to hold meetings or parties, then gravel is better as it can withstand the usage and application of tables, chairs and even a fair crowd of people, which a grass shall find difficult to withstand.
