A carbon footprint is basically a measure of the impact that our daily personal and professional activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced and emitted into the environment due our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation. An aspect of daily life which has gained much importance in recent times is the reduction of carbon footprint that we emit, be that as an individual, organization or as a nation. Just as our lives depend on our planetís natural resources, our planetís well-being depends on how well we take care of the environment.

Your carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses produced by human activity. The more electricity, gas, and fuel you use, the higher your personal carbon footprint. We can each reduce our personal carbon footprint by making simple changes to our behavior and lifestyles around the house and in our neighborhood. The concept of carbon footprint evolved from the fact that most gases which are emitted and which are harmful for the nature have a strong component of carbon in them and hence the term carbon footprint.

Some most common causes for carbon emissions include vehicles, indoor heating or cooling or even your home appliances. Some simple steps that you can take on a domestic level in order to reduce carbon emissions are using light bulbs which are energy efficient like fluorescent bulbs as against incandescent bulbs. You should also monitor electricity consumption at home by turning off lights and fans when not in use. Personal computers or laptops also consume a fair bit of electricity; hence turn these off if not being used. Before turning on the heater in the winter or the air conditioning in the summer, look at more energy efficient ways to make yourself comfortable without using any energy at all. Look at options like increasing insulation or having cross ventilation so that you do not have to use the room air conditioner or heater at all.

Another big culprit as far as carbon emissions is concerned are vehicles and pollution connected to them. The carbon monoxide which is spewed by the vehicular exhausts account for more than thirty percent of pollution and related ailments across the globe. Try to reduce usage of your car or any other vehicle. Whenever you think of taking your car out, try to figure out if you can make do with any other modes of public transport or even options like car pooling can be considered. If the distance is short, you can even think of walking to your destination, as this not only saves fuel and related emissions, but also is beneficial to your health.
