Fire is among the most devastating things that could happen to anyone. This cannot only take away properties but life as well. That is why we have to take precautionary measures to ensure that this will not happen to our home. In order to do that, we should know the essential things to avoid.

Below are some of the helpful guidelines you can use at home:

  1. Make sure that you take the electrical hazards into consideration. Electricity is among the most common causes of fire. It is tough because once the electricity cause fire, it spreads almost instantly. One of the best ways to prevent this is to avoid using extension cords. If you really need to use one, make sure that you use it properly. Check the wires first and see to it that it is in good condition. Do not twist it around a nail or a similar hook. Do not place it under the carpets as well. And always unplug them when not in use.

  2. It is also essential that you check your electrical lines as well as the appliances. If you sense that there is something wrong with the lines, contact an electrician right away. You should also take care of your appliances. Prevent them from overheating by providing air spaces. You should also take immediate actions when your fuse box explodes. If it blows frequently, reduce the number of appliances you are using.

  3. You have to take precautionary measure in the kitchen as well. Remember, there are several fire hazards there. To prevent accidents, make sure that flammable objects and ingredients are away from the cooking stove. Do not wear something that the flame will easily catch such as tops with long sleeves.

  4. If you are using candles as accessories at home, do not forget to put them out when you are not in the room. Keep them away from drapes and curtains as well. The same is true for your heaters. See to it that the heater is placed in an area of the house where it is safe from children and pets. Keep it away from flammable objects as well such as papers, carpets and furniture.

  5. The lighters and matches should be well kept, away from the reach of the children. Keep chemicals and other flammable substances away from them as well. They could bring it to the kitchen and play with them while you are cooking. It is not only a threat to your health but to your safety as well.

  6. Smoke detectors are big help as well. However, you should see to it that they are working properly. Regular maintenance is essential. You will not be able to benefit from them if they are damaged.

  7. Most importantly, you need to have safety equipment like fire extinguishers. See to it that the members in the family know how to use them as well. Place them in visible and accessible areas. Aside from the safety equipments, you should have an escape plan just in case a fire happens. Conduct a fire drill so that your family will know what to do.

Knowing the fire preventive measures are important. However, you should still prepare for it, just in case it occurs.
