Moving a house is a very important decision and needs to be planned and executed very carefully, as the smallest mistake can cost you thousands of dollars. The most serious mistake that most people do while moving is choosing the wrong moving company. The question is how do you choose the right moving company? So how exactly do you find a moving company that you can trust with everything that you own and feel safe in your decision?

Always contact the real estate agents in your area, especially the reputed and trusted ones, and they can tell you who to choose from. Make a list of reputed and reliable moving companies and contact them. Ask them for quotations, specifying your requirement in terms of distance, size of consignment and mode of transport required. Set up appointments for them to come to your house and do an in-home estimate in the order of your least favorite to your most favorite company. This is a necessary requirement. If you find that there are companies who are not interested to conduct an estimate, do not bother to contact them again.

Next find out how they intend to conduct the entire moving exercise. If they plan to sub contract the work, do not agree and look for another company. Never trust agents or brokers, as they tend to wash their hands off in case of any lapses and you are left to fend for yourself, with no support from either the agent or the contractor who did the job. Visit their office and make sure that they are well set and have a go down or a warehouse. Checkout their trucks to ensure that these have the company markings on them. Always ask questions about the price as well as the services that shall be offered at that price. Check out details regarding the insurance cover, the licensing, the documentation as well as the agreement. Get all details about the company, like full name, address, how long they have been in business, contact numbers of important people in the organization as well as some important references.

Once you have all details, get the quote. Once you have at least three quotes, compare and choose the best. You can also make some checks with the business bureau as well as the FMCSA's Safety Violation and Consumer Complaints hotline at 1-888-368-7238 and ask them about the complaint history of your moving company. This will give you a better picture about the quality of service of the moving company you have contracted. Lastly, never ever sign any agreement without reading the document very carefully, even if you have to make the sales representative wait.
