5 Methods for Obscuring a Hideous Wall- By: Fiona Creech
There are times in your decorating life that you are simply stuck with an ugly wall, and for whatever reason you cannot change it. Whether it is covered with wires and pipes, is chipped and damaged or is in a rented space, you may not have the option to reconfigure the wall, so instead, you have to work around it. With a little creativity you can not only work around the problem, but you can design a space that is quite lovely despite the ugly wall challenge.
The Simplicity of Paint
One of the most powerful tools that you have in your arsenal is paint, and sometimes, paint is actually the problem with that ugly wall. When a wall has just been covered with an unfortunate choice of paint or the wrong paint finish, you can easily correct that problem by properly preparing and painting the wall. For example, if you have imperfections in a wall, and then paint it in a high gloss finish, every divot in the wall will be magnified. So all you have to do to correct this situation is use joint compound to fill in as many divots and cracks as you can, let it dry and sand it smooth. Then cover the wall with flat finish paint, or a satin finish if it is in a high traffic area. The less sheen the paint has the better it will downplay any imperfections in the wall. Make sure to prime the walls well before painting, and do not shine light directly on the wall once it is completed. Shining lights directly on a wall calls attention to it, so shine them at another part of the room to redirect attention to a strong design element in the room.
Another way to deal with an imperfect surface on a wall is to cover it with heavy duty wallpaper. This wallpaper will do an amazing job at smoothing out imperfections in the wall and completely hiding small cracks in the drywall. You can even use wallpaper that is designed to be painted, so you can match the problem wall with the rest of the room. This type of wallpaper comes in a variety of thicknesses, so you can choose just the amount of camouflage that you need to make your ugly wall beautiful.
Where Wall Art Works
Another option that you have for dealing with an unsightly wall is to simply cover it. If the wall has a large flaw on it but is in otherwise good condition, you may choose to hang a large artwork over top of the flaw to hide it. You may choose paintings and prints to hide wall flaws, or for larger areas, you may want to try hanging a tapestry or a quilt. Not only will the wall hanging bring a lot of warmth to the room, but the ugly wall will be out of sight and out of mind.
Infrastructures Can be Unsightly
When you have a wall covered with pipes or wiring, you can cover it with a decorative screen or room divider. You can also mix and match solutions by combining a decorative screen with a large piece of artwork. However, by simply placing a screen in front of pipes and wiring, you can effectively hide the ugliness from view while leaving easy access for any maintenance that may be necessary down the road. As an added benefit, you can also use the area behind the screen for a little extra storage.
Fixing It with Furniture
Another way to obliterate an unsightly wall is to cover it with a large piece of furniture. Use a tall bookshelf or shelving unit to cover an entire wall. You can also find entertainment centers that cover floor to ceiling and wall to wall that will do a fine job of covering an ugly wall. Using furniture as a solution in this way not only hides the wall, but it adds interest and function to the room design at the same time.
