Childproofing Ideas for Your Home- By: Vicki Hat
Kids can trip on their own feet, fall down and get scratches and bruises. Sometimes things like this can be unavoidable, considering how active and playful they can be. Even if their motor skills are not fully developed, they do all sorts of plays. And giving them the freedom to do so may lead to certain types of accidents.
That is why it is very important to be able to childproof your home. This is one of the best ways to protect your child from getting hurt easily. You as a parent can have your own piece of mind even if you leave your kids for a minute to play on their own.
Gates set limits to where your kids can play. Since they are barriers that contain your kids to a certain area of the house, you know they won't get past get the danger zones. You could avoid getting your kids from crawling down the stairs and risk falls. Or perhaps, you can stop them from entering areas like the kitchen where all sorts of sharps can be seen.
Areas, where you kid play or where they spend most of their time, should be comfortable to crawl on or walk on. And comfort can be best achieved when everything that your kid steps on is firm but cushioned enough to avoid hard impact of falls.
Padding or mats can also be used to avoid slipping in your bathroom. Your kids can be prone to contusions and concussions, if they accidentally slip on your bathroom floor or tubs.
Kids are attracted to almost anything. They are attracted to water, to anything bright and shiny, and many others. They can stick their hands and head to everywhere. Hence, it is best you cover areas that have holes in them. For one, the electrical outlet can be one thing they would be curious about. Out of curiosity, your kids may poke it with anything, could be made of steel. Doing so puts them at risk for electrocution. Putting a cover can really prevent this type of accident.
Toilets should also have lids. However, it should have a latch that would keep it in place.
Kids may also like to twist and turn things. If they accidentally enter your kitchen, they may end up playing with your knob. Two possible things could happen: one, gas can be released on the air and air pollution and the other one would be starting a fire and your kids can get burned. To avoid problems like this, install latches.
The whole concept is also a good idea for your fridge and cabinets.
Certain items in your homes may be poisonous, not only to you but your kids as well. Examples of which are sharps, chemical solutions, medications and other hazardous substances. If you have plenty in your home, you need to keep them away from your kid. Use the proper container in keeping them, at the same time you have to ensure you keep them in the right storage areas of the house.
