Converting a Fireplace to use an Electric Insert- By: Fiona Creech
If you currently have a wood-burning fireplace which you don't use, there are a number of reasons to consider converting it to use an electric insert. These reasons might include the fact that the fireplace has fallen into disrepair, and it would be too expensive to fix in order to be able to burn a safe fire. Or, your home might need chimney repairs which would need to be made if you were to burn an actual wood fire in the fireplace. Some older fireplaces don't even meet the current local anti-pollution regulations. An older inefficient fireplace might not help to heat your home and may actually pull heat from the room instead of adding warmth. Of course, some people just want the charm of a working fireplace without the fuss and mess of dealing with wood and the problems that are sometimes associated with getting a fire started. The answer to all of these scenarios could be to fit your wood-burning fireplace with an electric fireplace insert.
Choosing an Electric Fireplace Insert
There are many different styles of electric fireplace inserts from which to choose. These units are simple to install, fitting easily into the fire box area of your fireplace. They consist of a fully enclosed metal box, and include glass doors which can be used to control the amount of heat that radiates into the room. If you want to maintain the overall look of your existing fireplace, you can choose one that fits in almost invisibly. Or, you might choose to change the overall look of your fireplace by choosing one that is ornate, which can add style and decorative details to a previously plain fireplace area. When selecting an electric fireplace insert, be sure to choose a one with a realistic appearance of the flames. When looking at a good model, it can be difficult to tell that you are using an electric fireplace insert instead of burning an actual wood fire.
Ease of Use
Even if your chimney or fireplace would need repairs to burn a real fire safely, these repairs are not necessary when using an electric fireplace insert. In fact, a chimney is not even needed in order to use these devices, as they can even be used in other areas of a room besides inside an existing fireplace, since they simply plug in using a standard three-prong plug. These inserts produce more easily controlled heat, which can efficiently help you achieve fuel savings. Instead of allowing heat to escape from the home through chimney venting, the heat is kept indoors, eliminating heat loss and providing much greater efficiency. You can also easily adjust the level of heat, with most fireplace inserts even having a setting that provides heat without the appearance of flames. And, if you ever remodel your home and have a desire for a fireplace in a different room, such as the master bedroom, you can move your existing fireplace insert to a new location. Plus, if you ever change your mind and decide you'd rather burn real wood, simply remove the insert and use it elsewhere.
