Decorating a Small Apartment in Eclectic Style- By: Fiona Creech
It’s fun to decorate any home in eclectic style because it allows you to explore designs, colors, themes and decor that appeals to you without being hung up on labels regarding the “right” or “wrong” way to decorate. A small apartment is an ideal setting for eclectic style; since the space is limited and walls are typically white, each piece or accessory used will be noticed and each choice contributes greatly to the overall ambiance. Also, if this is your first apartment and your budget is limited, you’ll be glad to know eclectic decorating is very affordable. You can use hand-me-downs from parents, family or friends and augment the basics with inexpensive finds from resale stores, flea markets and garage sales.
Use what you Love
Eclectic style lets you choose from different styles to create a look that is unique and personal. So instead of having to worry about everything “matching”, you can follow your heart and decorate only with what you love. Rather than thinking about matching up items by style, as in traditional or contemporary, look for other ways to weave a thread of continuity through your decor. For example, items from different eras may work together because they have a color or texture in common. Or you may choose one type of item – for instance, wall clocks – and decorate a wall with examples from different eras, styles, shapes, and so on. Let your instincts guide you: If you truly love a piece of furniture or artwork, you will find a way to use it. Very often, when you purchase an item just because it appeals to you, you’ll find that it nicely complements other items that you’ve already chosen. This is how following your heart leads you down the right decorative path.
Decorating does not have to be a serious and stuffy endeavor. Add a whimsical touch with items that make your smile or touch your heart. For instance, you may find an old movie poster that reminds you of an old friend or a favorite grandparent. Frame it and use it as a focal point in your entry! You may be drawn to certain figurines, such as swans or roosters. Build a collection and showcase it in a shadow box or on set of wall shelves. Whimsical items and unexpected decorative touches will add interest, color and personality to your apartment, making it a true reflection of you.
Add Bold Doses of Color
An apartment typically has white or beige walls and adding color with wall art, accessories or pieces of furniture makes them stand out with gallery-like prominence. If your furniture is also neutral, you can rev things up by tossing a few bold colored pillows and an interesting furniture throw into the mix. Lamps, lampshades, wall art, tapestries, window treatments, accessories, collectibles and accents are all opportunities to add color and interest. Try some interesting color combinations for a bold look. For example, warm tones like burgundy, gold and sage create a warm, welcoming ambiance; whereas steel gray, icy blue, silver and pearly white imbue a cool, contemporary feeling.
