Description : If you need to dispute your credit report, there is a correct way to go about it that will get you the best results. If you don’t do it all just so, you can still get decent results, but why not just learn the right way and maximize the effectiveness of your efforts? Let me just outline the important parts of disputing your credit report – the do’s and don’ts of the process. This should make you more successful in the long run.

As you dispute your credit report, it is imperative that you be truthful. You cannot just dispute everything. To dispute your credit report, you first need to get a copy of your credit report. There are plenty of places online you can get this. You can even get them for free, but be careful when you do. Most sites offer you numerous ‘up-sales’ that you will have to endure. Be ware: you do not need these up-sale items. Just get copies of your credit reports from the three credit reporting agencies and be on your way to improved credit—it can be done for free!

Once you have all 3 reports from the three credit reporting agencies, you need to read them over so you know what you want to dispute on your credit report. This should be relatively simple. You'll want to dispute the following:

  • Accounts with balances that you have actually paid off.

  • Accounts that you included in a bankruptcy (if you had one) that are still reporting and/or still have a balance on them.

  • Wrong information. This means anything—no matter how small of a detail is in error!

  • Inaccurately reporting accounts.

  • Wrong names.

  • Judgments or Tax Liens that are paid off but are not updated to ‘satisfied’.

  • Wrong social security numbers.

  • Wrong addresses (i.e. addresses you have never lived at).

  • Accounts that are not yours.

Once you have marked all these items, you dispute your credit report by creating your credit dispute letters. The simplest way to dispute your credit report is to utilize some sort of credit repair software. Here again, you don’t have to pay for this software anymore!

Remember, self credit repair should be free! You can find software on the internet for free that will help you to automatically generate your credit repair letters. This type of software program will enable you to write your credit repair letters quickly, and it will take some of the frustration out of it. But keep in mind: be ware of upsales that you don’t need! And be wary of downloads too. There is credit repair software that is completely freely available and doesn’t require you to download it to your computer.
