Finding Furniture that Serves Multiple Purposes- By: Jilda Peterson
When you uncover a piece of furniture that serves more than one purpose, it is a real find. You can save money and floor space by having a single piece of furniture do the work of two. If you live in tight quarters, this kind of furniture will prove to be very useful, adding more functionality than ever to a room.
Ottomans are one of the best multipurpose pieces of furniture on the planet. They can easily double as a coffee table or side table by simply putting a tray on top; you can have them upholstered in leather or suede so they work nicely as a footstool when you want one. Of course they are right there when you need extra seating in your room, and many of them open to expose an empty cavity that you can use for storage. For its simple design and humble appearance, the basic ottoman is one of the best pieces of multipurpose furniture around.
The Dining Room Table
Using your dining table as a place for the family to gather for meals or as a place to host a festive dinner party is the normal way that you would expect to use it. But if you find a table that has shallow drawers, it can double as a work desk. Keep pens and pads in the table drawers, and keep other supplies tucked away in the china cabinet or buffet table.
If you do not have an extra room to devote to a guest room in your home, you can certainly turn just about any room of your home into an occasional guest room by adding a sofa bed to the room. Adding a sofa bed or pull out bed to a family room, living room or home office is a great way to add the functionality of a guest room to your home without completely dedicating a room to the cause. For example, in a living room simply slide the coffee table out of the way, pull out the bed, and your guest room is ready to go. You can even store extra sheets and blankets in your ottoman or coffee table.
If you have a decorative hutch in your dining room, it makes a great place to display artwork, fine china or collectibles. It can also double as a great room divider with its elegant glass doors. Using a hutch to separate the dining and living rooms can add a lot of depth and interest to your decor.
One of the most common pieces of double duty furniture is the storage bench. It works great at the foot of the bed, in the dining room, or even in the foyer. The bench can easily be tucked against the wall for extra seating perhaps in a kitchen, or it can be placed front and center as the main attraction as in a foyer. Since it does not use much floor space, it is the perfect addition in smaller areas that need some extra seating. Then, flip up the seat to reveal a hollow space that you can use for storing everything from bath and kitchen items to boots and scarves.
