Help Your Kids Cope with a New Rental Apartment- By: Leticia Carvalho
Moving to a rental home can cause a lot of stress especially for children. At their young age, they find it difficult to understand why they have to move a new place, encounter new people, live a new life, and leave the old one behind.
Here are some guidelines on how to handle such a difficult situation.
- Talk to your kids and help them understand the situation. Explain to them why the family had to make such a big decision.
Do not make them feel left out. Let them participate in the process. You can assign simple tasks to them like packing their toys.
Make them feel that their opinion matters. Consult them about a prospect rental home or let them pick a room of their choice. Making them feel that they are part of the decision will make easier for them to accept it.
- Until the morning of the move, keep unpacked the things that you use everyday. Packing everything days ahead of the move will leave a feeling of discomfort in your own home.
Also, let the kids fill their bags with their most-loved items. As you move to your new rental home, let them help in moving the lighter and less fragile items so as to divert their attention from sadness. For children who are too young to help, make sure that a babysitter is around to look after them as you move your stuff.
- As you finish moving your things, let your kids help in unpacking. Again, make them feel involved by asking them how they would like their room, what suggestions they can give for home decorations, and the like.
As soon as everything is settled, live like your old ways. Go back to normal and do your old routine. This will make children feel the drastic change less.
Children need extra care and attention during situations like this. Help them adjust to living a new life in your rental home.
