Property Inspection Program Being Developed in Troy- By: John Cutts
Officials of Troy, New York have announced the development of a property inspection program which involves the inspection of rental properties as part of the city’s efforts to watch for code violations among properties for rent.
According to the local government, the program was launched to address the problems caused by absentee landlords and to create safe neighborhoods in the area. Local leaders further added that the project is a collaboration between the City Council and the administration. They will also get help from offices that enforce area code rules to map out a process that will suit Troy neighborhoods.
Under the rental property improvement program, officials will look at various neighborhoods to see how rental inspection processes are conducted. Reports revealed that the program will particularly focus on Cohoes and Albany.
Cohoes currently has a policy of inspecting rental properties whenever there is a turnover, with inspections conducted by code enforcement officials. Meanwhile, Albany conducts rental property inspections randomly in specific areas twice a year. Inspections in Albany are conducted by the Fire Department.
The proponents of the property inspection program have stated that it is highly likely that the parameters of the newest project will combine Albany and Cohoes’ inspection policies. They also revealed that actual inspections will be a collaborative effort between the Fire Department and units of code enforcement.
Along with code enforcement agencies and fire fighters, the program will also form a partnership with the Neighborhood Improvement group. The inspection project will get its funds from the Community Development Block Grant.
The people behind the inspection program have admitted that the project is still being polished and a lot of work is still needed to get it on its feet. Some improvements, according to project coordinators, are needed in every department, including providing training to some firemen in terms of performing code inspections.
Although the program has been considered for some time, the actual start of its development has made officials optimistic that it will help Troy become an improved and secure community. Rental property inspection is being seen by city officials as one way to fight blight in neighborhoods that have been affected by foreclosure.
