Tips on Living in Home for Rent with a Roommate- By: Leticia Carvalho

Description : People who live in costly rental homes usually choose to live with a roommate. Having the rent divided between two people can be a lot of savings.

However, sharing an apartment with another person entails inevitable disputes. Some roommates have the mindset that sharing a room also means sharing belongings. They can get too inconsiderate at times and invade the properties of other people.

Avoid roommate conflicts by following these 5 easy steps:

  1. Confirm your suspicion before confronting your roommate. Check first whether the item you think they took is really missing, you might have just misplaced it.

  2. After making sure that the item is missing, talk to your roommate in a nice manner. Do not jump into conclusions just yet and talk to them in an accusing way. For all you know, they might have not known that the item belonged to you or they might have taken it by accident.

  3. After hearing their side of the story, address the problem properly. The explanation your roommate has given you should determine the action you are going to take.

  4. If the solution you employed fails, conduct a discussion with your roommates. Tell them about what happened and how you value your belongings and that you want respect from them. Do not point fingers on one particular person. Let the others speak for themselves as well. Come up with a group decision on how the problem can be addressed.

  5. If the solution your group arrived at still does not work, rethink the conditions and come up with another resolution. You may choose to impose fines on who ever is proved guilty. Whatever decision you arrive at, be sure that everyone agrees.

Different people have different attitudes and values. You cannot expect other people to have the same attitude as you but you can definitely work out a solution and avoid conflict. Just keep in mind that whatever action you take, it must be for the welfare of everyone.
